Dust can be hazardous to health of young children, meeting told
CALGARY (CP) - Young children can be exposed to poisonous substances by breathing house dust, an international conference on air polluction has been told.
"Direct control of house dust may be one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce health risks to children in areas of significant air pollution," says members of the Air Pollution Control Association, based in Seattle, Wash.
House dust has been found to contain bacteria, viruses, dust, mites, asbestos and allergens, they say.
Two executive members of the association say indoor air pollution is likely the most serious environmental problem of the future.
"That's probably, on an individual basis, the most important environmental problem we're facing," says association vice-president Steve Hart.
Hart said the problem is worse in northern climates because people spend more time indoors and energy conservation practices have made buildings more air-tight, allowing the accumulation of pollutants.
